The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) on 6th November 2025 received the leadership of Amnesty International Nigeria, led by the Country Director, Mr. Isah Sanusi, on a courtesy visit to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. The visit was aimed at exploring areas of collaboration that will advance the rights, empowerment, and social inclusion of persons with disabilities across Nigeria.
Speaking during the visit, the Country Director of Amnesty International commended the Commission for its efforts in driving disability inclusion and emphasized the need for practical partnerships that contribute directly to improving the lives of persons with disabilities He stated that Amnesty International is committed to supporting skill acquisition initiatives, public enlightenment engagements across states, and promoting visibility of the abilities and contributions of persons with disabilities to national development. He emphasized the importance of moving beyond symbolic inclusion to ensure that persons with disabilities actively participate in programs and lead community impact activities that reflect their dignity and capability.
Also contributing, the Finance and Office Manager of Amnesty International, Ms. Benedicta Otigi highlighted that while many civil society programs are implemented across the country, meaningful engagement of persons with disabilities remains limited. She noted that the organization is looking forward to working with the Commission to expand coverage, deepen awareness, and promote the demonstration of skills, impact, and leadership of persons with disabilities at state and community levels.
In response, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan expressed deep appreciation for the visit and welcomed the interest in structured partnership. The Executive Secretary noted that the disability community represents a significant population within Nigeria and requires a coordinated approach that ensures access to opportunities, community participation, and sustainable empowerment. He acknowledged Amnesty International’s longstanding role in promoting human rights and stated that the Commission is committed to working jointly to develop operationally frameworks that will support skills development, economic participation, and protection against discrimination for persons with disabilities.
The Executive Secretary further emphasized that meaningful inclusion is not achieved through sympathy but through policy alignment, strategic investment in empowerment initiatives, and the recognition of persons with disabilities as contributors to society. He expressed the Commission’s readiness to collaborate in implementing projects that uplift the disability community, especially at the grassroots, where challenges are more visible and support systems are limited.
The Commission reaffirmed that its doors remain open to local and international partners who share the vision of building a Nigeria where no citizen is excluded or left behind.
