NCPWD, Development Partners, Stakeholders Hold National Dialogue To Mark 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), and its development partners held a National Dialogue on ‘Transformative Solutions to Disability – Inclusive Development in Nigeria,’ at the Congress Hall, Transcorp Hilton Hotel to mark the 2024 edition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) observed annually on December 3rd.

The dialogue was to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society and development.

Established by the United Nations in 1992, the day seeks to increase awareness about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in a bid to create awareness and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and inclusion of persons with disabilities.

Organisers say this year’s theme emphasizes the need for innovative approaches to achieve a more equitable and inclusive society.

According to the development partners which include Sightsavers, RoLAC, World Bank, CBM International, CBM Golbal, the Leprosy Mission Nigeria, CHAI and the British Council, the dialogue is call for practical strategies to address systemic barriers that will ensure full participation and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Therefore, in line with this vision, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), in partnership with the development partners hosted the grand event which brought together high-profile dignitaries, stakeholders, and advocates to champion the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

The Executive Secretary of NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan highlighted the importance of building an inclusive and sustainable society. He emphasized the need to amplify efforts in supporting the over 35 million Nigerians living with disabilities.

“We must reflect on where we are coming from, where we are now, and where we are headed. Today’s gathering signifies our collective commitment to creating an inclusive Nigeria. I deeply appreciate our partners and stakeholders who continue to champion this cause,” Hon. Gufwan stated.

Representing the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Senator Ireti Kingibe reiterated the Senate’s commitment to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities.

She drew inspiration from global leaders like Franklin D. Roosevelt, who overcame personal challenges to achieve greatness, and called for policies that would ensure every Nigerian has equal opportunities to thrive.

“Nigeria must recognize that democracy is not just about voting rights but also about the right to aspire and achieve. Let us work together to remove barriers and create a society where no one is left behind,” Senator Kingibe said.

Hon. Abba Isa, Senior Special Adviser to the President on Equal Opportunities and Special Needs, highlighted the federal government’s commitment to disability inclusion.

He announced plans for the speedy implementation of the Disability Act and lauded the media for amplifying the voices of persons with disabilities.

Prof. Nentawe Yilwatilde, Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, represented by Mr. Sunday Izakaya, Director of Special Needs, emphasized the need for increased funding and awareness to support disability inclusive initiatives.

Mr. Ayuba Plang, Country Director of RoLAC, called for an end to discrimination against persons with disabilities and urged all stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of the Disability Act.

Mr. Fabian Tukmen, representing the Country Director of Sightsavers, shared the organization’s unwavering commitment to building an inclusive society.

He elaborated on their comprehensive approach to disability inclusion, focusing on key areas such as health, education, eye care, and economic empowerment.

Tukmen highlighted Sightsavers’ upcoming Access to Work Scheme, set to launch in early 2025, which aims to alleviate financial burdens for small businesses, enabling them to hire and retain employees with disabilities.

“We believe in creating a world where persons with disabilities can thrive, where barriers are removed, and opportunities abound. This can only be achieved through collective action—everyone, from business leaders to policymakers, has a role to play in fostering inclusion,” Tukmen stated.

The event also featured award presentations to development partners, panel discussions, and exhibitions showcasing the resilience and achievements of persons with disabilities.
