Abuja, Nigeria – The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing mental health and psychosocial disabilities in Nigeria. This follows a courtesy visit by the Founder/Executive Director of She Writes Woman, Hauwa Ojeifo, and Jennifer Abomnger, who expressed their organization’s mission to lend mental health a voice in Nigeria and empower people with mental health and psychosocial disabilities to tell their stories and create solutions.

The visit highlighted the existing relationship between the commission and She Writes Woman, which dates back to three to four years when they hosted their first mental health roundtable for mental health and psychosocial disabilities at the commission. This meeting, in addition to other advocacy efforts, led to the establishment of the mental health desk at the commission.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Barr. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, expressed his gladness over the existing relationship and hopes to strengthen the partnership with She Writes Woman. He emphasized the commission’s desire to work with sister organizations and agencies to achieve its goals and commended She Writes Woman’s efforts in reaching out to people with mental health conditions.

The commission and She Writes Woman discussed potential collaboration on a workshop to provide orientation on psychosocial disabilities and strengthen the capacity of the commission in including psychosocial disabilities in its core mandate.

“Disability inclusion is a job for all and sundry,” said Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan. “We look forward to strengthening our partnership with She Writes Woman and other organizations to advance the course of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.”
