FIC Report (Borno State) – The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has released 200,000 bags of rice and other essential relief materials to assist victims of severe flooding in Nigeria’s North-East region. The affected states include Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe.
The Managing Director of the NEDC, Alhaji Muhammadu Goni Alkali, announced the relief effort during a handover ceremony in Maiduguri, Borno State.
In addition to rice, Alkali outlined that the commission was providing 150,000 cartons of pasta, 250,000 gallons of cooking oil, 200,000 mats, 200,000 blankets, 30,000 brocade fabrics, 20,000 mosquito nets, and 65,000 pieces of clothing, including children’s wear, to the six states.
Alkali explained that the commission will leverage political structures in the region, comprising 18 senatorial districts and 48 federal constituencies, to ensure the relief materials are distributed effectively to flood victims in each state.
Following a tour of flood-affected areas, Alkali highlighted that the NEDC’s intervention was part of immediate relief measures for the region, which include both short- and long-term plans.
According to him, following the recent flooding in Maiduguri caused by the breakdown of the Alau Dam, the NEDC has allocated food and non-food supplies for the affected areas and plans to re-evaluate the contract for the dam’s rehabilitation to prevent future disasters.
The relief materials were handed over to the Borno State government at the NEDC warehouse, following a briefing to journalists in Maiduguri.
