Nigeria has been elected as a member of the Communication committee of the UN 63rd conference on the status of women, in New York, Monday 11th March, 2019.
This was revealed by the Chair of the 63rd Conference on the Status of women madam Geradine Byrne at the ongoing meeting of the Commission, holding at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.
The Chair said that the election of Nigeria to serve in the communication committee is in recognition of the country’s leading commitment in the struggle for the elimination of all forms of violence against women in Africa.
In a Statement delivered at the Conference, on behalf of the African Union (AU), the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development Nigeria, Aisha Abubakar said that Nigeria will never relent in her quest to make the country and indeed Africa a Gender friendly society.
The Honourable Minister said that Africa will not witness any meaningful social-political development until such a time that the concerns of women take the front burner in African nations’ policy, planning and implementation.
The Honourable Minister also presented a second (2nd) Statement, on behalf of the ECOWAS States to the conference on the Status of Women 63rd Session.
Hajiya Aisha Abubakar said that with 66% of its population being young people and 52% being women, the demographic profile of ECOWAS shows a mainly young and female population.
She added that, the captured demographic shows that women and girls produce 70% of ECOWAS food requirements.
Hajiya Aisha said that, women’s active presence throughout the agricultural value chain and their contribution to the development of small livestock and its marketing cannot be over emphasised.
The Minister said that it is with this dynamism that the ECOWAS heads of states and government are  fighting against inequality in order to accelerate change with a strong social impact.
Hajiya Aisha Abubakar ceased the opportunity to commensurate with the government and people of Ethiopia over the Ethiopian air crash which took place on Sunday 10th March 2019.
She said that President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria sent his condolences to the UN Secretary General over the demise of Nine (9) staff of the UN in the Ethiopian air mishap.
