Nigerian Army Destroys IED Factory, Reopens Strategic Road Closed For Three Years In Imo

FIC Report (Imo State) – Troops of the Nigerian Army operating under Operation UDO KA have destroyed an improvised explosive device (IED) factory and successfully reopened a major route in Imo State that had remained inaccessible for over three years due to insecurity.

The operation formed part of ongoing joint clearance exercises conducted under Operation EASTERN SANITY, aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts and restoring normalcy in affected communities across the state.

In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, Olabisi Ayeni, troops conducted coordinated clearance operations along the Lilu–Eketutu Road within the Orsu–Eketutu Mother Valley axis.

The route, which serves as a critical link for the movement of people, goods and services within the area, had been deserted for several years following repeated attacks and threats by criminal elements.

According to the statement, troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade, working in collaboration with personnel of the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, carried out a comprehensive sweep of the area.

During the operation, several improvised explosive devices planted along the road were detected and safely neutralised by Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialists, thereby preventing potential casualties and restoring access to the road.

In a related operation within the Orsu–Ihiteukwa axis, troops conducting further clearance exercises encountered multiple explosive devices along their route of advance. Despite the explosions, the troops maintained operational momentum and discovered a suspected IED manufacturing facility linked to criminal elements operating in the area.

A search of the facility led to the recovery of various items, including ammunition, locally fabricated weapons, materials suspected to be used in the production of explosive devices, and other equipment.

The Nigerian Army then reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining ongoing operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks threatening peace and security in Imo State in particular and South-East region at large.

They also urged members of the public to support security efforts by providing timely and credible information to security agencies, noting that community cooperation remains vital to achieving lasting peace and stability.
