Speaking during the sensitization programme on National Anthem and National Values Charter organised by NOA, Kwara State Directorate, the Director General of National Orientation Agency, Mall. Issa Lanre Onilu said that the National Anthem is not just a ceremonial song played on special occasions but embodies the soul and spirit of the Nigerian nation. Every line, every word, holds a profound meaning that reflects our struggles, our aspirations, and our collective commitment to building a just and prosperous society.
He stated further that alongside the anthem, the National Values Charter enshrines the fundamental principles that should guide our conduct as citizens.
These values, according to the DG include integrity, patriotism, selflessness, and a sense of duty to the nation. He added that these values have been overshadowed by the challenges of daily survival and the pursuit of personal gain at the expense of national interest.
“Therefore, this campaign is not merely about raising awareness of these symbols of national unity; it is about restoring their rightful place in the hearts and minds of every Nigerian. It is about ensuring that these values permeate every sector of our society, from our schools to our workplaces, from our communities to our governance structures.
The National Values Charter.” He explained.
Stated further, the DG divided the national value charter into two sections namely: The Nigerian Promise (Seven Core Promises made by the country as represented by all elected leaders) and the Citizen’s Commitment to the Nigerian State (Seven-point Obligations of the Citizenry to contribute to the nation).
The Nigerian Promise which is the first segment presents the critical responsibilities of the government and its officials. These are:

Together, they constitute the fundamental identity of the Nigerian. These include discipline, duty of care, tolerance and respect, leadership and patriotism.
