The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), comprising of labour representatives and other trade unions have reached an agreement to pay the new N30,000 national minimum wage.
The necessary documents were finally signed by the Governor and the JNC on Monday, 13th January, as a commitment to pay the new minimum wage to workers in Edo State.
Meanwhile, the Governor had in his New Year broadcast, guaranteed public servants that they will be paid the new minimum wage, commencing from January 2020.
Governor Obaseki revealed that workers in the state would receive bank alerts on the 26th of January reflecting the new minimum wage.
The Governor noted that the success of the realization of the payment of the new minimum wage is as a result of the efforts and transparency on the part of the state government, labour and trade unions. He added that there should not be much difference in the remuneration of workers irrespective of the three tiers of government.
He aptly added, “what we have done in Edo is to change the emphasis, by emphasizing productivity. If you want someone to be productive, the minimum you can do is to pay the person a living wage.”
He also promised welfare package for workers in the state, which will include capacity building of public servants that will lead to efficiency and productivity
