Okpebholo Meets Aviation Minister, Pushes Edo Air Project

FIC Report (Edo State) – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has met with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, in Abuja to advance plans for the proposed Edo Air initiative.

The meeting, held on Thursday, focused on strengthening Edo State’s aviation sector through improved air connectivity, increased investment opportunities, and economic growth. Central to the discussion was the Edo Air project, a flagship initiative of the Okpebholo administration aimed at positioning the state as a regional hub for business, logistics, and tourism.

Speaking after the engagement, Governor Okpebholo said the discussions formed part of his administration’s broader economic development strategy. According to him, the Edo Air initiative would enhance transportation, boost tourism, stimulate trade, and create new opportunities for investors and residents of the state.

He noted that his government is committed to making Edo State a standout destination for development and investment, stressing that a functional state-backed airline would significantly improve connectivity and economic activities.

In his response, Minister Festus Keyamo welcomed the Governor’s vision and recalled Benin City’s historic role in Nigeria’s aviation sector, particularly during the era of the defunct Okada Air. He described the Edo Air initiative as timely and in line with the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen regional air connectivity and drive economic growth.

The Minister assured Governor Okpebholo of the Federal Ministry’s full support, noting that the establishment of Edo Air would boost passenger movement, attract investors, enhance trade, and create jobs, especially for young Nigerians.

Governor Okpebholo expressed appreciation for the Minister’s support, describing the Federal Government’s backing as crucial to the success of the project. He said continued collaboration between Edo State and the Federal Government would help build a sustainable aviation system that supports tourism, regional development, and national economic growth.

The meeting further reaffirmed the strong partnership between the Edo State Government and the Federal Government in promoting infrastructure development and economic transformation across the country.
