FIC Report (Ondo State) – The much-anticipated gubernatorial election in Ondo State, one of Nigeria’s off-season elections, took place on November 16, 2024, under the supervision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) across all eighteen local government areas. Leading up to the election, there was significant concern over potential violence, prompting the signing of a Peace Accord by political party representatives. This precaution was reinforced by the deployment of a comprehensive security framework to curb any attempts at disrupting the electoral process.

Election monitoring across the state highlighted the strong commitment of Ondo State voters to prioritize peace and security over political rivalries. Except for minor incidents in Idanre, the remaining seventeen local governments experienced an election period marked by an unprecedented level of tranquility. Notably, Ilaje Local Government, the governor’s home area, witnessed a festival-like atmosphere. Voters turned out en masse, accompanied by jubilant celebrations, including music and dancing. This harmonious display stood in contrast to Ilaje’s history of political strife and violence, a change largely attributed to the pride and unity felt from having produced the state’s governor for the first time since Ondo’s current political era began.

Similar scenes of peaceful participation were seen in Okitipupa Local Government, where the Ikale community engaged in a commendable show of democratic spirit. Feedback from voters across the state indicates widespread satisfaction with the peaceful nature of the election, marking a significant departure from the tense and often violent processes of previous years.

As the state awaits the official announcement of the election results, the prevailing hope is that the results will truly reflect the collective will of the people. The peaceful conduct of the election stands as a testament to the desire of the electorate for stability and order, fostering optimism for the maintenance of peace in Ondo State’s political landscape.
