The Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals has advocated adoption of Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) modeling to inform government decision-making on sustainable land management as well as planning processes for conservation and climate policy which play critical roles in boosting agricultural production and providing opportunities for decent employment and prosperity.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope Adefulire, while declaring open the stakeholders dialogue titled “Multi-Stakeholders Dialogue on Food, Agriculture, Biodiversity Land-use and Energy (FABLE)”, at Barcelona Hotel in Abuja, September 1st, 2022, noted that “the concept of Food, Agriculture, Biodiversity, Land-sue, and Energy (FABLE) aimed to understand how countries can transit towards sustainable land-use and food systems in line with legally binding international treaty on climate under the Paris Agreement, knowing that globally, land-use and land-use change account for 23% of Green House Gas (GHG) emission, leading to biodiversity loss at an alarming rate, which also lead to food system produces widespread under nutrition and obesity”.
Princess Adejoke stressed that to sustainably manage our land, we must strive to formulate and communicate long-term low greenhouse gas emission development strategies in line with article 22(b) of the Paris agreement on “increasing the ability to adapt to the adverse impact of climate change and foster climate resilience and low greenhouse gas emission development in a manner that does not threaten food production”.
She enjoined the participants to explore the potential areas of collaboration with all relevant stakeholders, noting that “the dialogue will serve as platform to identify critical players and actors to drive the FABLE initiatives and ensure sustainable land use management for food security that will consequently improve national security and fast-track the achievement of SDG-2 in Nigeria”.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Secretary of Program in SDGs office, Engr. Ahmad Kawu, represented by the Director, Planning Monitoring and Evaluation, Alhaji Abdullahi Bolaji Sa’adu expressed belief that the outcome of the dialogue will pave way for a concerted road-map on improved agricultural value chain in line with global best practices such that will move Nigeria to the rank of key countries who are contributing significantly to relevant SDGs and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
On his part the director, SDSN, Professor Labode Popoola said SDSN policy thrust is to strengthen effective partnership with key stakeholders in the implementation and actualization of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. He emphasize that SDSN is a leading international non-governmental organization that engages more stakeholders for sustainable development with emphasis on people, planet, peace, partnership and prosperity.
