The Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme and the Code of Conduct Panel will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to fight corruption.
This understanding was reached when the Chairman of Code of Conduct Panel, Chief Okoi Obonu Obla paid a courtesy call on the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Professor Charles Dokubo and Chief Obla explained that their panel was established to fight corruption and recover public assets.
He asked for the signing of an MoU so that his office will assist Presidential Amnesty Office in dealing with public officers that breach financial regulations and recover monies from funded contractors that refused to execute government contract.
While assuring the panel that his office was very willing to sign such a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Professor Dokubo said “working with your panel will enhance my capability in corruption fighting. Since I assumed office, I have seen various incomprehensible wrong things, like fraudulent admission of students not in our database or captured in the Amnesty programme including some foreign and Nigerian universities overcharging our Amnesty beneficiaries on our programme which I am compelled to refund these excess charges. I am a strong advocate of transparency and my office must be used as a vehicle to impart positively to the Niger Delta people.”
Earlier, Chief Obla hinted that corruption was responsible for 60% problem bedeviling development in the Niger Delta and added that the region’s underdevelopment has fully fueled youth restiveness. He revealed that his panel since its inception has fully fought corruption and confiscated corrupt assets. He mentioned that his panel made recoveries of $7 million and lots of millions of Naira for Nexim bank and will fully assist Presidential Amnesty Office in fighting corruption.
