Paternity leave, local Governance Reforms top Abia Assembly's Agenda

FIC Report (Abia State) – The Abia State House of Assembly has made some significant moves to promote family-friendly policies and strengthen local governance. Today 19th March 2025, they passed a motion urging the State Government to approve paternity leave for male officers in the Abia State Public/Civil Service. This motion, sponsored by Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Ume Mattias, proposes that male officers get 21 working days of paternity leave, which can be taken once every two years for up to four children. This is a great step towards enabling new fathers to care for their wives and newborn babies.

The House also considered several key bills, including:

• H.A.B 6: Establishing, structuring, and composing local government councils in Abia State.
• H.A.B 26: Reforming primary and secondary education in the state.

Additionally, Hon. Isienyi Boniface expressed gratitude to Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti for launching a 16-meter bridge in his constituency, which links Isialangwa North. Two motions were deferred to future legislative dates, including one addressing the urgent need to curb the desecration of Aba Waterside River and another concerning the development, regulation, and enforcement of Abia Local Content in all sectors of the state economy, except the oil and gas sector.
