FIC Report (Benue State) – The Nigerian Police have repelled a coordinated attack by suspected militia in the Sankera axis of Benue State, following swift response to intelligence reports received on Thursday, 17th April, at about 2100hrs.
According to a statement released by the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Anene Sewuese Catherine, the Commissioner of Police, CP Steve H. Yabanet, FCID, psc (+), immediately mobilized tactical teams to reinforce officers already on the ground. The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, engaged the attackers in a counteroffensive operation aimed at averting the threat to the affected communities, particularly in Gbagir, Ukum Local Government Area.
During the early hours of Friday, 18th April, the attackers, while retreating, opened fire on unsuspecting farmers. Five (5) persons were found shot in the Gbagir area and rushed to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead.
In a separate, simultaneous assault in Logo Local Government Area, twelve (12) persons were killed before police could arrive, bringing the total number of fatalities to seventeen (17).
Security forces are currently pursuing the retreating assailants into the forested areas bordering Taraba State.
The Commissioner of Police has issued a strong warning to social media users spreading unverified reports and inciting the public. He urged citizens to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions in the state. CP Yabanet reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to protecting lives and property and encouraged the people of Sankera to continue cooperating with security agencies as the operation intensifies.
