The Honourable Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, OON, SAN, recently held a crucial meeting with the Directors of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to review progress on the development of a new curriculum for the education sector.
During the meeting, Prof. Mamman emphasized the importance of ensuring continuity despite the recent passing of Executive Secretary, Prof. Ismail Junaidu. He expressed his deepest condolences to the NERDC staff and encouraged them to remain steadfast in their duties.
Prof. Mamman, while acknowledging the loss of a great educationist, advocated for Directors to work closely with their deputies, ensuring they are well-equipped and involved in all processes. This approach will facilitate continuity and institutional knowledge.
Prof. Mamman reiterated NERDC’s importance in advancing the education sector, highlighting its critical role in shaping the curriculum at the pre-tertiary level. He urged staff to rally around and tackle their responsibilities with renewed vigour, especially given the September timeline for implementing major reforms.
According to the Honourable Minister, NERDC’s role is pivotal in moving the education sector forward. Despite challenges, the Ministry ensures the curriculum reform is completed on schedule, and with a short timeline, there is a need to double efforts to meet the deadline.
Dr. G. D. Gandu, Director of Curriculum, assured the Minister of significant progress in curriculum development. “We have made remarkable strides in curriculum development, reflecting global best practices and aligning with government objectives. The new curriculum will focus on skills acquisition, digital literacy, 21st-century skills, and essential competencies, ensuring our educational system is competitive and forward-looking,” Dr. Gandu stated.
The Ministry of Education remains dedicated to transforming the education sector through comprehensive curriculum reforms and looks forward to continued support and cooperation from all stakeholders.
