Proposed Lekki International Airport Set For Site Inspection And Review – By Sanwo-Olu

FIC Report (Lagos State) – March 9, 2025 – Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that aviation regulators will visit the state next week for a site inspection and review of the proposed Lekki International Airport ahead of its construction .

The first phase of the project, subject to Foreign Exchange (FOREX) rates, was initially estimated to cost ₦171.64 billion (approximately $450 million). Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering the airport and other key infrastructural projects across the state.

The governor made these remarks during a guided tour of Alaro City and the Universal One Development along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, accompanied by members of the Lagos State Executive Council and top government officials. He emphasized that these projects would drive future investments in Lagos .

Strategic Location and Project Scope

The proposed Lekki International Airport, located 10 kilometers from the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ), is designed to accommodate the Airbus A380, making it a Code F-compliant airport. The project will span 3,500 hectares and was initially scheduled to be operational by 2028.

Collaboration with Summa Group

The Lagos State Government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the internationally renowned construction firm Summa Group for the development and construction of the airport. Governor Sanwo-Olu described the project as a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing connectivity, boosting economic growth, and attracting global investments. This groundbreaking initiative is an essential part of our vision to improve connectivity in Lagos, stimulate economic growth, and draw in global investments,” Sanwo-Olu stated via his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
