FIC Report (Benue State) – The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Wanune, Dr. Ashinya Tyover, has reaffirmed his commitment to repositioning the institution for academic excellence and infrastructural growth.
Dr. Ashinya made this known on Monday, 25th August, 2025, while addressing journalists during a press briefing at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Makurdi.
Highlighting key milestones recorded under his leadership, the Rector disclosed that the polytechnic has introduced 24 new departments, designed to reduce the hardship faced by Benue indigenes who previously traveled long distances to access quality technical education. He further revealed that with support from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), over 70 lecturers are currently undergoing training, while younger lecturers are being encouraged to deepen their engagement in research.
On infrastructural development, Dr. Ashinya explained that upon assumption of duty, he inherited an uncompleted structure at the institution’s permanent site in Wanune. According to him, the management has since completed the administrative block, lecture halls, and students’ hostel, providing a more conducive environment for learning and administration.
The Rector added that the polytechnic has successfully graduated 150 students and continues to uphold a policy of zero tolerance for cultism and related activities. He also confirmed that students of the institution are among the beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s NELFUND intervention programme.
On governance issues, Dr. Ashinya disclosed that the Senate of the institution had recommended the removal of Deputy Rector, Mrs. Doris Iorchir, citing her lack of requisite qualifications for the office.
In their separate remarks, the Chairman of the NUJ, Benue State Council, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, commended the Rector for his visionary leadership and transparent management of the institution’s affairs. He further assured that the union would soon embark on a fact-finding visit to the polytechnic to assess the level of infrastructural development.
Similarly, the Vice Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Jerry Tyosase, pledged the continued support of the media in projecting the achievements of the polytechnic to the wider public.
