Honourable Awaji-Inombek Abiante moved a motion at plenary on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 on the need to carry out a comprehensive audit of water infrastructure across the country.
In his motion, he noted that a survey conducted by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics, United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and World Bank  revealed that millions of households in Nigeria do not have access to clean water and 51% of Nigerians residing in the rural areas are faced with challenge of clean portable water.
Hence, poor access to improved water remain a major factor contributing to high morbidity and mortality rates in Nigeria especially from waterborne diseases like cholera, dysentery, diarrhea and others.
Furthermore, He stated that, despite the huge amount being budgeted annually for the provision and supply of clean water to Nigerians by the Government plus efforts by various Agencies to provide clean portable water in communities, it has not yielded positive result, majority of Nigerians living in both rural and urban areas still have no access to clean water.
The House believed that if there is comprehensive audit of water infrastructure in the Country and better coordination by all relevant bodies there would be adequate supply of safe, clean and portable water in all communities.
Therefore, the House urged Federal Ministry of Water Resources across the Country to carry out a comprehensive audit of all water infrastructures and use the outcome to draw a road map which will include complementary efforts of relevant Agencies to achieve adequate supply of clean, safe and portable water to Nigerians.
