SDGs 2030: Active Participation of State and Non– State Actors Required

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals SSAP-SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire has emphasized that achieving the 2030 agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals requires active participation of State and non-State actors in the coordination and mobilization of resources in support of the SDGs at all levels of governance.

Princess Orelope-Adefulire stated this at the one day inter-ministerial meeting “on the acceleration of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals” held in Abuja on 22nd May, 2024. According to her, the aim of hosting the inter-ministerial meeting was to deepen the office engagement with key stakeholders to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs in line with the Federal Government’s commitment and aspirations.

Speaking further, the SSAP-SDGs said that the Ministries, Departments and Agencies, States and Local Government Councils are responsible for the implementation of the SDGs in Nigeria while the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals has overall coordinating and reporting mandate for SDGs.

Adefulire reminded participants that it is pertinent to note that the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development envisions a present and future that is economically sustainable, socially inclusive and environmentally resilient. According to her “the vision is expressed at the framing of the 17 SDGs with a view to creating lasting positive impact on economic, social and environmental dimensions of development.

She also expressed hope that the meeting will re-enforce the participants’ commitment for an effective and inter-ministerial collaboration in support of the SDGs acceleration in Nigeria.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Secretary of Programmes OSSAP-SDGs, Engr. Ahmad Kawu reminded the participants that Nigeria is at the mid-point of the journey towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. According to him “The meeting was to take stock of the progress, identify challenges and accelerate the achievement of the SDGs in Nigeria”.

The Chairman Senate Committee on SDGs, Senator Danjuma Goje and others who spoke at the meeting commended the efforts of OSSAP-SDGs in the implementation of SDGs in Nigeria. They emphasized that with just six years left for the programme, there is need for all stakeholders to double their efforts in the areas of collaboration and allocation of funds to achieve SDGs in Nigeria.
