Point of Order

Order 42 & 52

Sen. Mohammed, Danjuma Goje sought and was granted the leave of the Senate to move a motion on the issue of Corona Virus (COVID-19).

Motion was approved for presentation and taken.

The Senate resolved to:

  1. Urge Mr President C-in-C to address the nation on the situation of the COVID-19 in Nigeria;
  2. Urge the Federal Government to take more drastic precautionary measures including but not limited to travel bans, restrictions on large gathering, tighten controls, stringent checking of people coming into Nigeria including mandatory 14-day quarantine, banning of some Countries;
  3. Urge the Federal Government and Nigerians to keep abreast of all measures and development related to Corona Virus worldwide;
  4. Urge the Senate to give full support to the Federal Government in fighting the menace of Coronavirus;

Additional Prayer

  1. Urge the Federal Government to open Testing Centres in each state of the Federation;
  2. Urge suspension of Airlines shuttling countries with a high confirmed rate of Coronavirus from coming into Nigeria;
  3. The government should urge all public spaces, Schools, Offices, Restaurants, Mosques, Church and indeed our homes to make regular hand washing with soap and hand sanitizer as compulsory;
  4. Urge the Federal Government to shut down the use of all International Airports except Abuja and Lagos to ensure proper monitoring, testing, and evaluation of passengers’ movement into and out of Nigeria;
  5. Urge the Federal Government to suspend the issuance of visa on arrival;
  6. Urge the Federal, State and Local government departments of public health to ensure that all public health requirements, Public hygiene generally to be properly monitored in accordance with the Health Enactment of States and Local governments;
  7. Urge the Federal government to ensure and immediately constitute a meeting of the National Council of Health and Information to harmonize their responses and advocacy to Covid-19;
  8. Urge the government to enforce quarantine of Nigerian citizens coming from countries that have cases of about 1000 of been declared high risk; and
  9. The Federal government should set up a special intervention fund for the purpose of tackling this Coronavirus;

-That the senate do consider the report of the Ad-hoc Committee on Nigerian Security Challenges on the need to Restructure, Review and Reorganize the Current Security Architecture in Nigeria.

The report was presented by Sen. Abudullahi, Yahaya Abubakar

Adoption of the recommendations of the committee was moved to another legislative date.

 All other items on the Order Paper were stood down to another legislative day
