Right the First Lady her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, left the Governor of Nassarawa state Eng Abdullahi A Sule during the commissioning of the resettlement city.

The resettlement city, which has been named after Senator Tinubu, is comprised of 40 households with a total of 239 individuals from North East Nigeria, Cameroon, South Sudan, and Central Africa, who are Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and refugees.

The facility was built by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) and was dedicated to Senator Tinubu by the Federal Commissioner, Tijani Ahmed.

The First Lady, speaking in Keffi, Nasarawa State on Saturday, urged residents to be law-abiding and assured that President Bola Tinubu is committed to ensuring the well-being and dignity of all Nigerians.

In a gesture to alleviate their plight, Senator Tinubu donated 400 bags of 25kg rice, 1,200 pieces of Ankara fabric, and 600 pieces of national fabric to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees in the area.

The First Lady expressed her delight in the efforts to empower the occupants, citing the allocation of 100 hectares of farmland for the families to cultivate for food and income. She also welcomed the provision of essential facilities in the resettlement city, including greenhouses, vocational training centers, a police station, a church, a mosque, and a clinic, which she believes will facilitate the families’ integration and independence.

Senator Tinubu commended the host community, Yar Kande, for their warm hospitality and reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s vision of ensuring that all Nigerians live in a dignified environment, have access to education, and contribute productively to society, thereby renewing their hope for a better future.

The Honourable Federal Commissioner, Ahmed, during his welcome address, highlighted the features of the newly established resettlement city, which includes:

  • A solar-powered greenhouse to boost food security and support agricultural livelihoods
  • A fully equipped hospital to cater to the health and physical needs of residents
  • A modern school providing inclusive basic education
  • A skills acquisition centre to empower residents with market-relevant skills for economic independence
  • A place of worship for all, featuring both a mosque and a church to promote spiritual well-being and communal harmony
  • Over 40 blocks of well-constructed flats offering safe, decent, and dignified housing for residents

Ahmed noted that these facilities will not only provide a place for people to live but also create a thriving community where families can rebuild their lives and contribute to the country’s development.

The resettlement city has already provided a new home for 40 households, comprising 239 individuals, including refugees from Cameroon, South Sudan, and Central Africa.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, in his remarks, assured the residents that their voices have been heard and their concerns are being addressed. He promised that the federal government would replicate the resettlement city across the country to bring hope to children, women, and the entire nation.

The Minister commended the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, for generously providing the land and facilitating the integration of the resettled individuals.

Hon. Bashir Garba Lado, Chairman House Committee on Senate Matters, during his goodwill message as the former Honourable Federal Commissioner of NCFRMI disclosed that he is privileged to lay the foundation stone for resettlement cities in Kano, Katsina and Borno state.

A reflection of our belief that every Nigerian deserves the opportunity to rebuild their life with dignity. I am proud that this effort has been sustained and expanded by my successors.
