Single-Use Plastic Set To Be Banned Totally By Lagos State Government

FIC Report (Lagos State) – The Lagos State Government has restate its determination to enforce a complete ban on single-use plastics (SUPs) by the end of January 2025. The initiative is one of the broader strategy targeted at curbing environmental pollution and ensure that waste management is reduced in the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo wahab confirm the validity of this commitment during an inspection tour of flood-prone areas on Lagos Island. The purpose of the tour is to assess the impact of improper waste disposal on local infrastructure.

SUP Ban is affiliated to the Global Environmental Goals that Single-use plastics, including styrofoam and disposable containers, are notorious for their role in environmental degradation. Their non-biodegradable nature have intensively contributed to pollution, prompting the need for decisive action. Lagos State’s initiative aligns with the global efforts to reduce the environmental damage caused by plastic waste.

Wahab highlighted the government’s progress since the initial ban on SUPs was introduced in January 2024, particularly derives noting the reduction in styrofoam litter. He emphasized on the detrimental effect of poor waste management on critical infrastructure.

During the tour Wahab ,referred to issues at the Ilubirin pump station, where improper disposal practices have led to system blockages.

The commissioner further noted that the inspection was important to ensure that contractors are prepared to resume work and to evaluate whether project timelines could be expedited. The on going enforcement measures aim to consolidate these gains and ensure a cleaner , healthier environment for all residents .
