The Supervising Minister of Information, Dr. Nuruddeen Muhammad has disclosed that apart from the efforts of the Federal Government bringing the war on terror firmly to the regional and continental agenda, with ECOWAS and the African Union adopting measures to combat terrorism, it has also introduced a number of specific measures to address the fallout of the insurgency in the three North-Eastern States of Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe, which are the worst-affected by Boko Haram activities.
The Supervising Minister of Information made this known today, 31st December, 2014 while addressing a World Press Conference at the National Press Center, Radio, House, Abuja. He revealed that it is the effort of the Federal Government which led the United Nations to declare Boko Haram a foreign terrorist organization. Dr. Muhammad further revealed that Multinational Joint Task Force was also set up by Nigeria and its neighbours under the auspices of ECOWAS to tackle insurgency in the region, just as “a number of specific measures to address the fallout of the insurgency in the three North-Eastern States of Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe, which are the worst-affected by Boko Haram activities”, were also put in place. The measures, the Minister said, include the Safe School Initiative, the Presidential Committee on Victims Support also known as “Nigeria Terrorism Victims Support Foundation,” and the Presidential Initiative for the North-East (PINE), whose responsibility is to plan, coordinate and raise funds for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of places ravaged by the insurgents.
