The Honourable Federal Commissioner, Hon Tijani Aliyu Ahmed, extended his heart-felt sympathy to the Executive Governor of Borno State, His Excellency Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, CON, MNI, people and families of victims impacted by the horrific events of the fast several days.
The Commission is saddened by the recent catastrophic flooding as a result of the overflowing of the Alau Dam, which led to the devastating flood in Maiduguri and environs. Our prayers and thoughts are with those who lost their lives and wish their souls a peaceful rest.
In line with our mandate, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), which is vested with the responsibility of ensuring protection, assistance, care, maintenance and rehabilitation as well as provision of durable solutions to those displaced by climate change induced disasters will provide food, non food items, educational materials, WASH, Shelter, drugs and medical supplies for emergency needs in order to bring succor to those adversely impacted by the flooding.
He highlighted that the Commission will also ensure the provision of mental health and psychosocial support to those traumatized. Also, the Commission will support Borno State Government in providing access to the Commission’s recovery Shelter at Amarwa Resettlement City.
He also said, in order to prevent the re-occurrence of this unfortunate incidence in the future, the Commission will liaise with relevant stakeholders to organise advocacy on the need to educate households to ensure clearing of drainage lines to allow seamless flow of water within Maiduguri metropolis and other communities. In view of the foregoing, an immediate palliative arrangement has been concluded by the Commission to stabilise the displaced population in Borno state.
