Tinubu’s Swift Intervention Sparks Hope for Edo’s Crumbling Infrastructure

FIC Report (Edo State) – In a significant development that has rekindled hope among Edo residents, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s prompt action to address the state of federal roads in Edo has been widely praised by government officials and the public alike. The move comes after years of neglect and numerous complaints about the deteriorating condition of key highways, notably the Benin–Warri dual carriageway bypass.

During an inspection visit to the problematic road, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpbholo, and the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, expressed deep concern over the dangerous and dilapidated state of the roads. Both leaders described the situation as a national embarrassment that has caused untold hardship and frequent accidents for commuters and motorists.

Following their advocacy, President Tinubu swiftly approved a comprehensive plan to overhaul critical sections of the federal road network in Edo, including the repair and reinforcement of the Benin–Warri highway. Minister Umahi praised the President’s quick response, explaining that the inclusion was a direct result of President Tinubu’s admiration for Edo’s leadership and progress. He stated, “The President has directed that 100 kilometers of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway be constructed through Edo. This is a special gift to the people of Edo.” The intervention aims to provide immediate relief and ensure the long-term durability of the infrastructure.

Minister Umahi emphasized that Nigeria’s road network had been neglected for decades. “President Tinubu inherited a backlog of failed projects and dilapidated roads, but his resolve to fix these issues is truly commendable,” he remarked. Umahi also noted that the Federal Government has directed contractors to reinforce the road base, elevate the carriageway, and eliminate weak points, employing reinforced concrete technology designed to last between 50 and 100 years.

Governor Okpbholo, visibly moved, recounted his recent personal inspection of the roads, where he was alarmed by the number of stranded vehicles and accidents. “The condition of our roads has been a source of concern for our people. Today, I see hope that real change is possible,” he said. He assured residents that, with increased contractor presence and federal support, the projects will be completed before the next rainy season, restoring public confidence.

The Federal Government has also announced plans to extend intervention efforts to other critical roads in Edo, focusing on safety and durability. This collaboration between federal and state authorities signifies a renewed commitment to rebuilding Nigeria’s infrastructure.

Later that evening, during Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebration at the Edo State Government House Villa in Benin City, Minister Umahi made a major announcement. On behalf of President Tinubu, he revealed that a 100-kilometer stretch of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway passing through Edo had received presidential approval — a significant deviation from the original plan. This move underscores the federal government’s confidence in Edo’s leadership.

The project, managed by Hi-Tech Construction Nigeria Limited, will benefit Edo alongside several other states, including Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. The inclusion of Edo is seen as a reward for the state’s proactive leadership and unwavering commitment to infrastructure development.

Edo Governor Okpbholo expressed profound gratitude for the President’s support, calling it a turning point for the state’s growth. “This intervention signifies that we are on the path to a brighter future. It shows that the federal government recognizes Edo’s potential and leadership,” he said.

As Nigeria celebrates its independence, the renewed focus on infrastructure development in Edo offers hope that the nation’s roads and public facilities will finally receive the attention they deserve. With swift federal action and collaborative efforts, Edo’s crumbling infrastructure may soon be transformed into a model of sustainable development.
