FIC Report (Edo State) – The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Professor Mrs. Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, on August 22nd, 2025, paid a Courtesy visit to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), His Excellency, Senator Dr. George Akume. The visit highlights UBTH’s ongoing efforts to foster robust collaboration with the Federal Government aimed at enhancing healthcare services across Nigeria, with particular emphasis on Edo State.

During the cordial meeting held at the SGF’s office, Prof. Ize-Iyamu conveyed the hospital’s commitment to strengthening Institutional partnerships that will translate into improved healthcare delivery, research, and training. The visit also provided an opportunity for the UBTH leadership to discuss strategic initiatives and potential collaborations that could benefit the entire Nigerian health sector.

In her remarks, Prof. Ize-Iyamu expressed appreciation for the Federal Government’s support and reiterated UBTH’s readiness to contribute to national health objectives. “Our visit underscores our dedication to working hand-in-hand with the Federal Government to advance quality healthcare, improve medical infrastructure, and foster innovations that will benefit our citizens,” she said.

The SGF, Sen. Dr. George Akume, welcomed the UBTH Delegation warmly and commended the hospital’s efforts in providing exemplary Healthcare Services in Edo State and beyond. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between Federal and State Health Institutions to achieve Nigeria’s Health Development goals.

Senator Akume assured the UBTH team of the Federal Government’s continued support for Healthcare Initiatives, emphasizing that collaborative efforts are essential to overcoming the challenges faced by Nigeria’s health sector, including inadequate infrastructure, manpower shortages, and access to quality care in rural areas.

The meeting also explored avenues for joint programs, research projects, and capacity-building initiatives that could enhance service delivery and medical training. Both parties agreed on the importance of leveraging federal support to upgrade healthcare facilities, improve health policy implementation, and promote health innovations.

This visit reaffirms UBTH’s position as a key player in Nigeria’s Healthcare landscape and underscores the hospital’s proactive stance in forging strategic alliances to advance medical excellence and health outcomes in Nigeria.
