FIC Report (Edo State) – The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has inaugurated its recently renovated Paediatric Outpatient (POP) Reception and Nurses Bay, a move that signifies a major advancement in the hospital’s efforts to improve Healthcare Services for Children. The Official Commissioning took place on Monday, March 2, 2026, with the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Professor Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, leading the ceremony.

Professor Ize-Iyamu described the renovation as a strategic investment in Patient-Centered Care, emphasizing that the upgrades were financed through the hospital’s internally generated revenue from Patient Services. She highlighted that this initiative is part of UBTH’s ongoing commitment to reinvesting resources into service improvements that directly benefit patients and their families.

She also clarified that the renovation is separate from a larger, ₦2.5 billion Legacy Project approved by the Edo State Government to develop a modern Paediatric Centre. This forthcoming facility is expected to significantly transform paediatric healthcare delivery at UBTH, providing state-of-the-art services for young patients.

The CMD explained that the decision to upgrade the reception and waiting areas was driven by the need to create a more welcoming, comfortable, and Child-friendly environment. “With these improvements, our young patients and their families will now be received in spaces designed to reduce anxiety and promote comfort,” she stated. The renovated clinic features redesigned seating arrangements, enhanced lighting, and a warm, inviting ambiance tailored to meet the needs of children.

In addition, the Nurses Bay received substantial enhancements aimed at streamlining Service delivery and ensuring better patient care. Professor Ize-Iyamu commended the Staff of the Paediatric Department for their dedication and support during the renovation process.

The Commissioning Ceremony was attended by hospital Management, Staff, Community Leaders, and other Stakeholders, all of whom described the development as a significant milestone in UBTH’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare outcomes for children in the region. The upgrades underscore the hospital’s commitment to providing quality, Child-friendly Healthcare Services to the Community.
