FIC Report (Ondo State) – Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State yesterday declared that his administration would never compromise workers’ welfare on the altar of political expediency, saying the civil service remains the bedrock of governance and sustainable development.

Speaking during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade, Akure, Aiyedatiwa hailed the resilience, integrity and unwavering dedication of workers across sectors, stressing that their commitment drives the state’s ongoing progress.

He said: “Our modest gains in office have only been possible because of your hard work across all sectors. From schools and hospitals to ministries and agencies, you are the true engine of governance.

“As we continue in the journey of our administration, I want our workers to be rest assured of the patronage and protection of the state government. We shall not sacrifice the welfare of our workers on the altar of politics.”

Reeling out government achievements, Aiyedatiwa announced that over 2,000 teachers had been recruited, and the minimum wage increased to N73,000, ahead of the federal benchmark. He also revealed that pensioners now receive a N30,000 monthly award, with gratuities and salaries being paid regularly and promptly.

On career advancement, the governor said promotions were up-to-date, with the 2025 promotion exercise already underway, while recruitment in health, education and other sectors continues as part of strategic workforce expansion.

Aiyedatiwa lauded labour leaders for maintaining industrial harmony and their support for government initiatives, particularly the “OUR EASE” blueprint which has improved civil service delivery.

Also speaking, Ondo State Head of Service, Mr. Bayo Philip, praised the governor for his unwavering commitment to the public service, noting that Aiyedatiwa has not only fulfilled promises on welfare, but has consistently prioritised timely payments of salaries, pensions, and gratuities.

“You reaffirm your commitment to the development of the service at all times. Mr Governor, you have done well,” he said.

Comrade Ademola Olapade, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Ondo State, commended the courage of workers and described the day as a symbol of collective struggle for justice and equity.

While praising Aiyedatiwa’s inclusive governance, he urged the administration to intervene in areas such as insecurity and introduce relief programmes to cushion economic hardship.

He also called for an upgrade of Owena Press PLC, publishers of The Hope titles, to the status of a Corporation or Agency like OSRC, to provide a structured and fulfilling career path for journalists working there.

On his part, Comrade Clement Fatuase, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), praised the government for its prioritisation of workers’ welfare and called for timely promotions for qualified civil servants in 2025.

He appealed for improved security across the state and urged workers to remain committed to productivity.

Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Chairman of the Planning Committee for the 2025 May Day celebration, Comrade Leke Adegbite, lauded the governor for his support for OSRC and Orange FM.

He appealed for the inclusion of OSRC Television on cable networks to expand its reach.

Adegbite also urged the government to appoint a journalist as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, and to clear outstanding four-month wage arrears of Owena Press workers.

In a significant federal contribution, Adenike Mabgboruko, Controller of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, praised both past and present workers for their sacrifices.

She emphasised the importance of protecting civic space amid economic pressure and commended the state’s achievements in social investment and recruitment.

She reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to upholding labour laws, promoting industrial peace, and urged labour unions to intensify education programmes for their members on labour rights, industrial relations and conflict resolution.

She said: “Your recent achievements, especially the recruitment in education and health, affirm a sincere commitment to workforce development. We pray for continued strength, wisdom, and success as you steer the state towards greater prosperity.”

The event featured a colourful workers’ procession themed “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship”, cultural displays, solidarity songs, and awards for outstanding workers.

Dignitaries at the celebration included Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami; Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji (represented by Majority Leader, Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi); Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti; Chief Judge, Justice Olusegun Odusola; Chief of Staff, Prince Segun Omojuwa; members of the State Executive Council, traditional rulers, permanent secretaries, student representatives, trade union leaders, and top civil servants.
