The Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, fsi, has reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to the reintegration of gender based violence victims.
Speaking at an empowerment programme today in the Ministry Headquarters Abuja, she stated:
“Today we gather not merely for ceremony but to celebrate and witness the reintegration and empowerment of a brave young girl who survived a harrowing act of sexual violence perpetrated by her 75 year old landlord”.
Speaking further, the Honourable Minister clarified the responsibility of the Ministry and emphasised that the Ministry’s core mandate lies in the formulation of national policies , guidelines and regulatory framework to address Gender based violence and promote the welfare of women, children, families and vulnerable groups.
The Minister said this in her office when she handed over the sum of one million naira to the victims.
In addition, she remarked that the direct responsibility for the reintegration and rehabilitation of survivors rests with the State governments who are closest to the communities and have the constitutional mandate for service delivery.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim reaffirmed that the survivor and her mother have been officially under the Ministry’s emergency care since March 9, 2025 through the support of the Ministry’s valued partner, Safe Haven Foundation, an Abuja- based NGO known for its commitment to preventing domestic violence and sexual abuse.
She noted that at the shelter, they received comprehensive medical care, psychological support, daily meals and lived in a fully furnished and secure environment that included round-the- clock caregiver services.
The Honourable Minister also used the occasion to extend deep appreciation to Safe Haven Foundation for their unwavering partnership and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, whose Renewed Hope Agenda she said, continues to prioritise the protection and development of women, children, families and vulnerable groups across Nigeria.
While reiterating the mandate of the Ministry, she also affirmed that the Ministry remains steadfast and dogged in its determination to strengthen national frameworks, foster partnerships and build systems that ensure the protection, healing, restoration and empowerment of survivors.
The representative from Safe Haven Foundation, Miss Mary Jane extended appreciation to the Honourable Minister and the entire Ministry for their prompt response and humane management of the case.
