The Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, has pledged his commitment to advocating for the swift passage and formal approval of the Peace Corps Bill.
Comrade Olawande made this commitment during a courtesy visit from the leadership of the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN), led by its National Commandant, Dr. Dickson Akoh, on Friday, January 31, 2025. Their discussions centred on the potential impact of the Peace Corps initiative on youth empowerment and national development.
The Minister emphasized the importance of such initiatives in bridging cultural divides, fostering mutual understanding, and equipping young people with opportunities to contribute meaningfully to national progress.
“The government is making significant strides toward creating a brighter and more unified future for all. This important legislation aims to enhance international cooperation and promote community development by enabling young volunteers to engage in meaningful service both locally and globally,” he stated.
In his remarks, Dr. Dickson Akoh underscored the critical role of the Ministry of Youth Development in shaping the future of the nation. He noted that when young Nigerians are adequately empowered, communities thrive, economies grow, and societies progress.
“We are confident that under your leadership, the Ministry will continue to foster innovative programs that uplift young Nigerians, support their talents, and prepare them to become the leaders of tomorrow,” he affirmed.
Dr. Akoh further highlighted that since its establishment over two decades ago; the PCN has been self-sustaining, funding all its structures and activities across the country.
“This includes sponsoring members to attend various international conferences and meetings organized by the United Nations and the African Union in countries such as Ghana, Kenya, the United States, Brazil, and Switzerland”, he stated.
He also commended the Minister for developing a policy framework focused on establishing initiatives such as a Youth Bank, a Youth Rights Desk, and other essential programs aimed at empowering young Nigerians.
In recognition of his dedication to youth development, the Peace Corps Council—the highest decision-making body of the organization—bestowed upon the Honourable Minister the esteemed title of National Patron, along with all associated symbols of office.
