2nd Nigeria Spokespersons Summit Concludes in Abuja with strong participation from Borno

The 2nd Nigeria Spokespersons Summit organised by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, has successfully ended in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The three – day summit, themed ” integrity and the Evolving Roles of Spokespersons in leadership communications,” brought together former Ministers of information, Spokespersons from various government and corporate organizations, doyens of public relations, and other key stakeholders in the communication industry.

The summit was formally declared open by the Honourable speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Tajudeen Abbas.

Borno was prominently represented at the summit by a high – level delegation led by the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof Usman Tar. Accompanying him were the special Adviser on media and official Spokespersons to the Borno State Governor, Dauda Iliya and the senior special Assistant on media, Baba sheikh Haruna.

A major highlight of the summit was the ministerial clinic, during which the current minister of information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, and five former ministers – Prof Jerry Gana, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, Mr Frank Nweke II, Hon Labaran Maku and Alhaji Lai Mohammed – shared valuable insights and experiences on managing communication in public office and responding to emerging issues in the media space.

The summit also marked the official unveiling of the Nigeria Spokespersons charter and practice code, a professional framework aimed at enhancing ethical communication and transparency among Spokespersons across the country.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the summit, Professor Usman Tar commended the initiative and expressed optimism that the newly introduced code would play a vital role in shaping public discourse, particularly in states like Borno.

The summit is indeed timely, especially considering the volume of misinformation often circulated about Borno State,” said professor Tar.

“This professional, code will significantly aid in promoting accurate narratives and enhancing our public relations strategy, particularly as Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s, administration intensifies efforts on resettlement and recovery.”
