Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, was a Nigerian nationalist who played a key role in Nigeria’s independence movement. He died in his hometown of Ikenne in Ogun state. He was 78 years old. Awolowo was an opposition leader in the first post-independence Parliament and came to be regarded as leader of the Yoruba tribe. He played a major role in the constitutional conferences in London and Lagos that paved the way for independence.
