Edo speaker tests positive for covid-19

The Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly,  Hon.  Frank Okiye, has tested positive for Coronavirus. This was disclosed to journalists by the State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu in Benin City.

Rt. Hon. Shaibu added that Hon. Okiye who recently returned from the United Kingdom has gone into isolation, adding that a test carried out on his sample showed positive.

He further said that the Speaker was the index case in the state whose identity was not revealed on Monday 23rd March.

Hon. Shaibu further disclosed that the Speaker’s wife and daughter who had close contact with him however tested negative.

The Deputy Governor also revealed that the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has gone into self-isolation following the news that the Governor has met Mr. Kyari  the Chief of Staff to  President Muhammadu Buhari,  who has contracted the disease, at the National Economic Council (NEC) and had  also met  Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State at the Nigeria Governors Forum

Media aide to Governor Godwin Obaseki, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said the governor’s sample has been sent for test.

According to him, ”although the Governor is not showing any symptoms of the virus, he has taken the necessary precaution to self-isolation in a bid to protect people that may otherwise come in contact with him.”
