The Member representing Umuahia South State Constituency ,Hon. Jeremiah Uzosike, has bemoaned the level of erosion induced devastation and damage to the road linking Imo state from Umunwanwa in Abia State.
Uzosike saw the road that has fallen into ruins and brought it as a matter of urgent public importance to the plenary session that commenced sitting yesterday at the State House of Assembly Complex.
Hon. Jeremiah informed the House that the contract to construct the road was awarded by NDDC but has been abandoned by the contractor adding that the effects of erosion has made the petroleum pipelines in that area to be 20ft above the normal level.
The Hon. informed the Plenary that the erosion influenced ruptures to the pipe-lines forcing the petroleum products to leak which constitutes health hazards to the surrounding communities.
Hon. Uzosike, therefore, appealed to the Speaker of the House,Rt, Hon. Chinedum Orji as a matter of urgency to write a save-our-soul letter to the NDDC urging it to conduct a forensic audit of the road Contract and an intervention of the house to direct the NDDC contractor to return back to site immediately noting that Umunwanwa Primary School had been totally destroyed by erosion.
Uzosike also informed the House that Olokoro River bridge will collapse before the end of July if an intervention construction is not carried out immediately.
The Speaker assured that the attention of NDDC and that of the State Ministry of Environment will be contacted to do the needful.
