FIC Report (Imo State) – In a bid to ameliorate the negative effects of open defecation and actualize the Federal Government’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) number six (6) which is ” achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation” paying attention to the needs of women, girls and those in vulnerable conditions, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources (FMWR) under the watch of Engr. Sulieman H. Adamu embarked on the construction of sanitation facilities across the Nation.
The South-East was not left out as several sanitation facilities have been constructed by FMWR in collaboration with Anambra Imo River Basin Development Authority (AIRBDA) with Imo as the pilot state.
These sanitation projects under the Institutional Strengthening of “Clean Nigeria and Stop Open Defecation Program” where constructed in public places like Churches, Markets, Schools etc across the state and handed over to the various communities.
Notable places where these sanitation facilities have been constructed in Imo State are;
1. Orie Obibi Market Obibiezena, Owerri North LGA.
2. Okpala Secondary School, Ngor Okpala LGA.
3. St. Benedict Catholic Church Obokwu Obizi, Ezinihitte LGA.
4.St. Patrick’s Secondary School, Ogbe Ahiara, Ahiazu LGA.
It is believed that these facilities if spread across more communities and fully utilized will go a long way in ending open defecation in Nigeria by 2030.
