The African Union Development Agency- New partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD) Nigeria in a bid to get the continued buy-in of the Nation Assembly, has taking the African Union Agenda 2063 Awareness campaign to the door steps of members of the National Assembly.
Yesterday September 9th, 2024, the Agency had a Strategic Sensitization Workshop on the Implementation of Agenda 2063 2nd Ten years plan for Nigeria with the National Assembly Joint Committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa/NEPAD.
The National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer, Princess Gloria Akobundu fsi who was represented by the Assistant Director, Planning, Research and Statistics Dept, Mrs. Olubumi Omowumi said the workshop is to underscore the importance of awareness and sensitization as tools for ensuring that Agenda 2063 goals are realized both at the grassroot and at the National levels.
“This stakeholder forum, which brings together the Joint National Assembly Committee on Cooperation in Africa/NEPAD and key stakeholders, is a critical step towards acquiring the necessary knowledge and strategies to implement this agenda effectively in Nigeria.”
“It is essential that we embrace the AU theme for the year: “Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century,” as education and skills are the backbone of sustainable growth.”
She described Agenda 2063 as Africa’s most transformative vision and a bold and ambitious roadmap towards unity, self-determination, progress, and prosperity for all Africans.
“Agenda 2063 serves as a concrete manifestation of Africa’s pursuit of political and economic independence, inclusive socio-economic growth, regional integration, and sustainable development.”
“It is the collective vision of a continent determined to realize the Africa we want—a continent where peace, security, democratic governance, and prosperity are the norm, not the exception,” she added.
Akobundu noted that the success of the implementation of Agenda 2063 relies on the ownership and active participation of all Africans – Governments, civil society, academia, the private sector, the media, and even Africans in the diaspora.
The CEO expressed confidence that the workshop will equip the participants with the necessary tools, strategies, and knowledge to implement the second phase of Agenda 2063 effectively in Nigeria.
On their parts, the Chairman Senate committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa/ NEPAD, Senator Nasiru Sani- Zangon-Daura represented by the Clerk of the Committee, Mr. Alika Friday Okechukwu, said the legislator has an important role to play in the realization of Agenda 2063 and it is through tapping from the benefits of Sensitization and leveraging on partnership that the set objectives of AU Agenda 2063 and other developmental goals can be met.
He assured that some of the objectives of Agenda 2063 are already work-in- progress noting that African countries are now taking advantage of their comparative advantage through building the necessary partnership in the areas of infrastructure, human capital and strategic area in line with Agenda 2063.
The Senator pledged the resolve of the 10th National Assembly to enhance partnership with the Executive in providing enabling environment for the implementation of the 2nd Ten years plan of Agenda 2063 in the country.
The event featured members and staff of the Joint Committee on Integration and Cooperation in Africa/Nepad and also staff from AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria led by Assistant Director PRS and the Deputy Director APRM, Mr. Shehu Usman Garba. The AU Agenda 2063 First Ten years plan ran from 2013- 2023 and the implementation of the 2nd Ten years began in 2024 to end in 2034.
