FIC Report (Katsina State) – The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Katsina State Government recently held a roundtable to promote renewable energy solutions in Katsina State. Key stakeholders, including Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESCOs), financiers, and technology providers, discussed electrifying rural communities under the new Electricity Act, 2023.

The roundtable which was held in Abuja yesterday, highlighted REA’s commitment to collaborating with the state government and partners like Katsina State Enterprises Development Agency (KASEDA) and the Katsina State Rural Electricity Board. It showcased programs such as the National Electrification Strategy and Implementation Plan (NESIP) and data-driven tools like VIDA, aimed at scaling renewable energy projects across Nigeria.

Outcomes from the Roundtable were:

  1. Incentives for RESCOs: To create an enabling environment that encourages investment in renewable energy projects, the government of Katsina State is prepared to offer a range of incentives to attract RESCOs to the State, including but not limited to:

i. Land allocation at subsidised rates for renewable energy infrastructure development.
ii. Fast-track approval processes through a dedicated desk for renewable energy projects.
iii. Logistical support to secure storage for equipment and assistance in community engagement to ensure smooth project implementation and local support.
iv. Facilitation of power purchase agreements with local businesses, providing a ready market for electricity and ensuring a steady revenue stream for energy producers.
v. Security guarantees for RESCOs’ investment and workforce.

  1. Mapping of Mini-Grid Sites: VIDA, an REA service provider, presented a mapping of 850 viable mini-grid sites in Katsina State, capable of providing sustainable electricity to approximately 1.5 million residents.
  2. Presentation of REA Initiatives: REA presented key programs, including the DARES project, the State Matching Fund program, and the Energizing Healthcare initiative, emphasising its strategic, data-driven approach to scaling renewable energy.

His Excellency, Governor Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State, emphasised his administration’s commitment to renewable energy for businesses and homes. “We are proactively addressing electrification through a comprehensive strategy in line with the Electricity Act, collaborating with NERC to ensure sustainable energy access,” he stated.

Hajiya Aisha Aminu Abdullahi-Malumfashi, Director General of KASEDA, reinforced the Governor’s vision, emphasizing KASEDA’s commitment to empowering MSMEs and supporting youth entrepreneurship while highlighting the importance of clean energy for economic development in Katsina State.
