The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, launched the Nigerian Education Data Initiative (NEDI) Implementation Committee today, marking a significant step toward a data-driven revolution in Nigeria’s education sector.
In his remarks at the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, Dr. Alausa underscored the urgent need for a unified education databank to address the sector’s persistent challenges of data fragmentation and incompleteness. He explained that NEDI aims to establish a robust Nigerian Education Databank capable of tracking every student’s educational journey from early childhood to tertiary institutions using the National Identity Number (NIN) as a unique identifier.
Dr. Alausa tasked the 25-member Implementation Committee, chaired by himself, with developing and executing a roadmap for NEDI’s success. Their terms of reference include harmonizing data systems across educational agencies, ensuring data security and confidentiality, and engaging stakeholders for nationwide support.
Speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, described NEDI as a transformative initiative poised to drive data-informed policies, equitable access to education, and innovation across all levels of the sector. She emphasized the inclusive representation within the committee, comprising stakeholders from UBEC, NUC, TETFund, and other agencies, as essential to achieving the initiative’s objectives.
In his goodwill message, the Minister of State for Agriculture, Dr. Aliyu S. Abdullahi, emphasized the critical role of education data in achieving economic diversification. He highlighted the need for a reliable production index, which he stated depends on credible education data. Dr. Abdullahi further urged the committee to focus not only on the supply side of the data but also on the demand side to ensure alignment with industry needs.
“So that at the end of the day, what the tertiary institutions are churning out will be relevant to the industries,” he remarked.
Delivering another goodwill message, Dr. Kamil Shoretire, representing the Honourable Minister of Health, commended NEDI’s alignment with health sector reforms and its potential to enhance data credibility, manpower development, and systemic efficiency across sectors. He noted the initiative’s capacity to foster cross-sectoral improvements, particularly in verifying educational qualifications and strengthening national systems through credible and actionable data.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by the committee’s Vice Chairman, Mr. Abubakar Isah, who reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to delivering on its mandate. He expressed gratitude to local and international partners for their support and pledged the committee’s dedication to transforming Nigeria’s education system through NEDI.
