Edo State's Commitment to Stability: Governor Promises Police Outpost and Support

FIC Report (Edo State) – In light of the Federal Government’s commitment to Law and Order, Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has affirmed his determination to ensure that those accountable for the tragic violence that occurred on February 21 in seven communities within the Ovia South West Local Government Area face justice.

During a recent assessment visit to the affected areas, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to restoring lasting peace and security. He promised to establish a police outpost to prevent future incidents and bolster security measures in the region. The Governor underscored that his foremost responsibility is to secure peace and safety, stating unequivocally that under his leadership, all crimes will be met with appropriate consequences.

“Based on the testimonies and ongoing investigations, we are dealing with criminals who invade your farms to steal the crops you have worked hard to cultivate. As your government, we are committed to pursuing them. I assure you that you will be able to live in peace here. Our forthcoming actions will demonstrate our commitment to enduring stability. No individual should wield more power than an entire community—terrorizing the populace for mere agricultural gains. We will locate them, bring them to justice, and ensure peace is restored,” declared Governor Okpebholo.

He encouraged community members to remain peaceful and refrain from taking matters into their own hands, assuring them of government intervention.

“I understand the pain you are experiencing, but I urge you to remain composed and not retaliate. Continue to uphold the peace as you have been doing. Rest assured, we will enhance our governmental presence here to facilitate genuine development. We have already deployed military personnel to the area and added three more Operation Rescue patrol vehicles to support them. Upon my return to Benin, I will work closely with the Commissioner of Police to expedite the establishment of a police outpost to ensure ongoing security,” he stated.

Additionally, Governor Okpebholo met with leaders and members of the nearby Ijaw community of Gbelebe to promote unity and convey government support.

“My primary mission as Governor is to restore peace and foster development. Progress cannot occur without peace. The violence and killings must cease. This community is large, yet lacks essential infrastructure like roads and electricity, while criminal activities continue to overshadow development efforts. I assure you that my administration is committed to gradually implementing significant advancements in this area,” the Governor assured.

Leaders from the Madoti and Gbelebe communities recounted that the tensions began when criminals attempted to steal crops from farmers in Madoti’s settlements but were confronted by a recently established local vigilante group. They expressed concerns over the persistent issue of agricultural theft and urged the Governor to bolster efforts to safeguard lives and property, allowing farmers to work without fear of violence.
