In a bold move to transform medical education and advance President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, inaugurated the Ministerial Monitoring Committee on the TETFund High Impact Intervention Project for the Rehabilitation of Medical Schools in Abuja.
The committee is tasked with overseeing the implementation of a nationwide initiative aimed at upgrading medical schools across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Under the Nigerian Education Sector Renewed Initiative (NESRI), the intervention targets critical infrastructure in faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing—covering lecture theatres, laboratories, hostels, and clinical training environments.
“This initiative goes beyond increasing access to medical education; it is about reshaping the future of healthcare in Nigeria,” Dr. Alausa said. “We are laying the groundwork to train a new generation of globally competitive health professionals.” He added that sanctions would be recommended where necessary to maintain the integrity of the initiative.
Aligned with NESRI’s Pillar Three—Tertiary Education Reform and Expansion—the project reinforces the Federal Government’s dedication to expanding access to quality tertiary education and strengthening healthcare, innovation, and economic development.
Dr. Alausa also emphasized the Ministry’s broader focus on STEM and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), citing ongoing efforts to modernize science and technical colleges, expand TVET institutions, and enhance academia-industry-government collaboration.
“Our vision is to equip every Nigerian youth with the education and skills needed to realize their full potential and contribute to national development,” he added.
Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, noted that the intervention supports NESRI’s third pillar and aligns with the President’s goals in human capital development, healthcare, and economic empowerment. She urged committee members to carry out their duties with “passion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.”
TETFund Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny Echono, said the committee’s inauguration reflects the Minister’s strategic vision to address challenges in the health sector. He emphasized that rehabilitating medical school infrastructure is crucial to improving the quality and output of healthcare professionals.
The ceremony ended with the formal inauguration of the committee.
