Nigeria Education Group Unveils Bold Reforms To Transform Education Sector

The Nigeria Education Group (NEG), under the leadership of the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, has unveiled a comprehensive series of reforms aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s education sector. The announcements were made during a high-level meeting chaired by Dr. Alausa, which brought together key education stakeholders to align national priorities and promote collaboration across all levels.

Dr. Alausa commended the synchronization of NEG’s meetings with the National Economic and Social Research Institute (NESRI), describing it as a “strategic move” that will enhance national cohesion in education reform.

“This marks a new era for education in Nigeria—one defined by innovation, coordination, and inclusivity,” said Dr. Alausa. “We remain committed to building an education system that empowers every learner and supports national development.”

Mr. Abel Olumiyiwa Enitan, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, emphasized the importance of adopting best practices in education, particularly in the area of Private Schools Education (PSE). He stressed that creating a bright future for younger generations requires thoughtful consideration of the right place, time, and purpose.

The discussion also highlighted the critical role of human rights and social responsibility in education. Stakeholders acknowledged the influence of societal values in shaping the educational landscape and promoting student well-being.

Mrs. Muyibat Olodo, Director of Science and Technical Education, provided updates on the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Committee. Formed in collaboration with UNESCO, the Ministry of Youth Development, and other partners, the committee aims to enhance technical and vocational training nationwide. To date, it has trained 1,061 individuals, with additional initiatives set to launch soon.

UNESCO’s representative and co-chair, Mr. Manish Joshi, emphasized the importance of civic responsibility and stakeholder coordination. He applauded the collaborative efforts of the National Councils on Education, NESRI, and other partners, stressing the need for synergy in achieving shared educational goals.

He reiterated the strategic value of aligning regular NEG meetings with NESRI to drive a more unified and effective education policy framework.

The meeting featured progress reports from major NEG subcommittees, with a strong focus on data digitalization, teacher training, school safety, and education funding.

As Nigeria continues its journey toward comprehensive education reform, the Honourable Minister of Education remains resolute in his commitment to building a more inclusive, coordinated, and future-ready education system for the nation’s youth.
