FIC Report (Benue State) – The Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Rev. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has called on all government appointees to uphold the highest standards of integrity by fully complying with asset declaration requirements.
Governor Alia, represented by his Deputy, Barr. Sam Ode, MNI, made this call during a one-day sensitization workshop organized in collaboration with the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB). The event took place on Monday, May 19, 2025, at Nnam Hotels, Makurdi.
In his address, the Governor emphasized the importance of honesty in public service, stating that all appointees must declare their assets both at the beginning and end of their tenure. He stressed that declarations must reflect current holdings, not anticipated acquisitions.
He also highlighted the structure and responsibilities of the Code of Conduct Bureau and the Code of Conduct Tribunal, urging strict adherence to ethical guidelines to prevent abuse of office and promote integrity.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Bem Anande, Benue State Director of the Code of Conduct Bureau, expressed concern over increasing non-compliance among state appointees. He noted that many officials have defaulted on their asset declaration obligations, stressing the need for accurate documentation, proper guidance, and reconciliation to avoid conflicts of interest and ensure transparency.
Mr. Anande further explained the post-declaration verification process and warned that honesty from the outset is essential to avoid sanctions.
In her closing remarks, the Secretary to the State Government, Dcns. Serumun Deborah Aber, Esq., underscored the role of asset declaration in promoting good governance. She commended the collaboration between the CCB and the state government in organizing the workshop and encouraged all appointees yet to comply to do so without delay and in line with the law.
