Governor Alia Urges Corps Members to Embrace National Service, Skill Development

FIC Report (Benue State) – The Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Rev. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has charged Corps members deployed to the state to emulate the patriotic spirit of the founding fathers of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) by contributing meaningfully to national development.

Governor Alia made this call on Friday, 13th June 2025, during the official opening and swearing-in ceremony of 1,303 Corps members of the 2025 Batch ‘A’ Stream II at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area.

The Governor, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth, Sports Development and Creativity, Dr. Phillip Nongu, emphasized the vital role NYSC plays in fostering national unity and integration. He assured the Corps members that Benue is “a home away from home,” adding that the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, has implemented robust and proactive measures to ensure their safety throughout the service year.

Dr. Nongu highlighted the importance of the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, encouraging Corps members to take it seriously as a gateway to personal and economic empowerment.

Also speaking at the event, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Veronica Garba, warmly welcomed the Corps members and reaffirmed the commitment of the NYSC to a well-structured orientation programme. She noted that the programme is designed to instill discipline, patriotism, and a spirit of selfless service.

Mrs. Garba also informed the Corps members that they would be co-opted into various administrative roles within the camp to strengthen their leadership and citizenship skills and encouraged active participation in all camp activities.

The oath of allegiance was administered to representatives of the ten platoons by the Chief Judge of Benue State, Hon. Justice Maurice Ikpanbese, who was represented by Hon. Justice J.N. Adagba.
