FIC Report (Abia State) – In a bold stride toward accelerated development, the Abia State Government (ABSG) has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The MoU, which focuses on critical sectors such as SME development, digitalization, energy, and agriculture, marks a transformative phase in the state’s developmental journey.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Governor Alex Otti described the MoU as a significant milestone in the evolving partnership between Abia State and the UNDP, stating that the agreement lays a solid foundation for impactful collaboration.
“For us, this MoU marks a significant time in our journey. It means clearly that we can count on your support because we now have a document that binds us to a shared vision,” Governor Otti said. “We will go about to do what we have to do to ensure that we do not let you down.”
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive and equitable development, emphasizing that the welfare and security of the people remain the core priorities of government. He highlighted the natural entrepreneurial spirit of the Abia people and stressed that even minimal governmental support can yield tremendous results in productivity and innovation.
“Our people are ready; we just need to provide the right environment and support,” Otti said. “This MoU is a turning point in the state’s development trajectory, and we are fully committed to its implementation.”
The partnership is expected to bring technical expertise, capacity building, and financial support to key development sectors, aligning with the UNDP’s Integrated Smart State of Accelerated Development strategy.
On her part, UNDP’s Resident Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Elsie Attafuah, lauded the progress recorded under Governor Otti’s administration, describing the signing as a historic moment.
“This MoU is not just a formality; it represents our commitment to co-investing in Abia for a better Nigeria,” Attafuah said. “It is the first landmark MoU we’ve signed within the framework of our Smart State Development initiative.”
She further praised the state’s forward-thinking leadership and reiterated UNDP’s support for the Aba Export Growth Lab, which was officially launched the same day.
“Abia is increasingly becoming an epitome of what subnational governments can achieve through visionary leadership and strategic partnerships,” Ms. Attafuah added.
The signing of this MoU is expected to open new avenues for growth, positioning Abia as a model for other states in Nigeria in terms of sustainable and inclusive development.
