FIC Report (Nasarawa State) – Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule said the House of Representatives’ efforts on the review of the nation’s constitution will provide actionable inputs geared towards reviewing and strengthening the 1999 Constitution (As Amended).
Sule, while expressing support to the process, said the review has come at a time when public outcry is tense to alter sections of the constitution for effective national development.
He spoke at the North Central (Centre B) Public Hearing by the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review in Lafia, Saturday.
Represented by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Isaac Danladi, said the bills are significant to the development of the nation, noting that alteration is a necessary step to building virile democratic space.
Chairman of the North Central (Centre B), Ahmed Wase, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, said the Committee will look into some thematic areas of the review to include; Electoral Reforms, Local Government Creation, Judicial Reforms, Traditional Institutions, Legislature, Security and Policing, Devolution of Powers, Strengthening Institutions, Fiscal Reforms, Citizenship and Indigeneship, Fundamental Human Rights, States and Local Governments Creation and Inclusive Governance.
In their goodwill messages, Governor of Benue, Hyacinth Alia and his counterpart of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang emphasised that the session was an opportunity to make their decisions, positions and insights known to concerned authorities.
Alia, represented by his Commissioner of Justice, Fidelis Benson, said in order to squarely address the insecurity plaguing the nation, state policing should be introduced in the Nigerian security architecture.
Also speaking, the Aren Eggon, Ahmed Ubangari, who spoke on behalf of the Nasarawa State Council of Chiefs and the Gbong Gwom Jos, Jacob Gyang Buba, urged stakeholders to work actively to correct anomalies and imbalances to enhance Nigerian Federalism.
Participants at the event were drawn of Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) comprising of the Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Danladi Jatau, former President of Nigeria Bar Association, Yakubu Maikyau, members of the state houses of assembly, federal lawmakers, women groups, civil society organizations and the media.
