FIC Report (Oyo State) – Nurses at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State capital, have joined the ongoing nationwide strike, which was declared by the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives. This follows the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government.
The strike, which commenced on July 29, 2025, has, today, paralyzed nursing services across public health institutions, as nurses demand urgent attention to long-standing welfare and professional issues.
While speaking to newsmen after the closed-door meeting of the Nurses union body at UCH, the Chairperson of NANNM UCH chapter, Funmilayo Faminu, said the decision to fully comply with the national directive was unanimous.
According to her, the Association was demanding the Immediate gazetting of the approved 2016 Nurses Scheme of Service; implementation of the National Industrial Court (NIC) judgment of January 27, 2012, among other demands, which included review and enhancement of professional allowances, recruitment of more nurses, creating Directorate cadre for nurses in the system of the Federal Ministry of Health, and improvement of healthcare infrastructure across the country.
It would be recalled that the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment had earlier convened a meeting with the association, but talks ended in a deadlock, prompting the ongoing industrial action by the nurses in government hospitals across the country, while some state governments, including the Oyo State, beginning their nurses not to join in the strike.
