FIC Report (Abia State) – The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, has celebrated teachers across the state, describing them as “builders of the nation, torchbearers of knowledge, and architects of tomorrow.”
Speaking at the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration in Umuahia, Governor Otti, represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, commended teachers for their dedication to laying the groundwork for society. He noted that his administration has prioritized teacher welfare, ensuring timely payment of salaries and implementing improved welfare packages and professional development programs.
The Abia FIRST Education Programme aims to improve access, quality, and sustainability in education, with initiatives like free and compulsory education from Primary 1 to JSS 3, Smart School construction, and public school revamping.
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, appreciated Governor Otti for restoring dignity and hope for teachers, saying every teacher represents a heartbeat of the education system.
The National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Titus Amber, commended Governor Otti for supporting teachers and improving education quality, requesting further improvements, including smart welfare packages and training opportunities for teachers.
NUT State Chairman, Comrade Madu Friday Chukwujekwu, highlighted the importance of supporting teachers, citing the theme “Recasting Teaching as a collaborative profession.” He commended Governor Otti for prioritizing education, allocating 20% of the 2025 budget to education, and recruiting teachers.
The event which featured presentations and gifts to the Governor from newly recruited teachers, had in attendance traditional rulers and top government officials.
