The Executive Director of Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC), Dr. Abdulmumini Aminu Zaria has said that NIWRMC has forged alliance with the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) on hydrological data exchange and integration of the Commission’s regulatory systems for water allocation and licensing.

He made the disclosure when he paid a courtesy visit to the Director General of NIHSA in Abuja.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr Aminu-Zaria said he wants to “co-develop hydrological models to support the Commission’s regulatory decisions for water allocation, reservoir operations and long term planning”.

He noted that the Commission also wants to “collaborate on floodplain mapping and dam operation strategies to integrate disaster risk data into the regulatory framework.”

The Executive Director remarked that NIWRMC wants to “utilize NIHSA’s monitoring data to validate water balances and directly inform Catchment Management plans.”

“There is the need to conduct joint training and workshops to exchange technical expertise in hydrometry, forecasting and flood risk management,” he said.

Dr Aminu-Zaria stated that he wants NIWRMC and NIHSA to “co-develop hydrological performance indicators and publish joint reports to inform government policy and regulatory planning.”

The Director General of NIHSA, Umar Ibrahim Muhammed while responding said NIHSA is ready to partner with NIWRMC for results that will translate into effective water management.
