The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology celebrates World Science Day today in Abuja with the theme: “Trust, Transformation and Tomorrow: The science we need for 2050”.
Speaking at the event, the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh said that the theme for this year’s celebration is apt and calls for a renewed trust between science and society, a dedication to transformative Innovation, and a shared vision for a suitable and inclusive future, which aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in economic diversification, job creation and youth empowerment through Science, Technology and Innovation (STI).
He further said that trust in science is built when people see tangible benefits in their daily lives. Adding that a remarkable example is the tela-maize initiative implemented by the Ministry through the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NABRDA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for the betterment of Nigerians.
Udeh noted that homegrown technology that mirrors our reality must be the driving force behind the economic and technological transformation of nations. Accordingly, Nigeria has developed high-quality Neem-based minero organic fertilizer currently used by farmers in Northern Nigeria, which improves soil health, lessens pest infestation, and increases food sustainability.
The Minister emphasized that through policies and programs, the Ministry will continue to strengthen institutional capacity, promote research, and encourage Public Private Partnerships (PPP) that would advance homegrown solutions to national challenges.
He called on stakeholders to take all necessary steps to support and harness the full potential of science technology and the innovation ecosystem for the socio-economic diversification of the country.
In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary Mrs. Esuaban Nko Asanya said that Science, Technology and Innovation is the bedrock of sustainable development and is an essential component that will help achieve economic diversification in line with Sustainable Development Goal for economic transformation.
She reiterated that science, technology, and innovation promotes national and international solidarity for the benefit of community and Nigeria at large, therefore young boys and girls should be encouraged to study Science from elementary stage of education.
In a goodwill message, the ETSU of Kwali HRH.Dr Lukas Ayedoo Nizassan III called on Nigerians to harness the abundant natural resources in the country to create homegrown technology that will tackle the challenges of our dear nation.
The event witnessed Science exhibitions from various Secondary Schools within Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the Agencies.
