The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted the First Consultation Mechanism on Matters of Mutual Interest Between Nigeria and Mexico on Wednesday 26th November 2025 at the Ministry’s Headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting was co-chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, PhD and Ambassador Anibal Gomez Toledo, Director-General for Africa, Central Asia and Middle-East, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, who led the Mexican delegation.

The meeting reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties, enhancing economic opportunities, and advancing multilateral cooperation.

Discussions covered a wide range of strategic areas, including:

Political Dialogue:
Outlook for high-level visits and structured dialogue mechanisms, alongside preparations for the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Nigeria–Mexico diplomatic relations.

  • Economic and Trade Relations:
    Promotion of the Nigeria–Mexico Chamber of Commerce and Industry,, expansion of business exchanges, and exploration of new trade and investment opportunities.
  • Legal instruments and Consular Cooperation:
    Review of existing legal instruments under negotiation, identification of new areas for cooperation, and enhancement of consular collaboration between both countries.
  • Multilateral Affairs:
    Joint engagement on pending candidacies, participation in the G-20 Summit, and shared support for reforms of the United Nations system.
  • Regional Affairs:
    An update on the regional situation in ECOWAS and areas of mutual concern.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed conveyed Nigeria’s appreciation to Ambassador Gómez Toledo and his delegation for their commitment to strengthening the long-standing relations between both nations, reaffirming Nigeria’s readiness to advance cooperation for mutual benefit.

The next session of the consultative meeting will be held in Mexican.
